SEO Guide Part 4: SEO Backlinks and How You Can Get Them

What's next

Recently we’ve been covering the SEO process from start to finish. Now, we’re on to SEO backlinks. If you haven’t seen our other articles on Search Engine Optimisation I’d recommend having a look now! Once you’ve completed your on-page SEO work, it’s now time to think about boosting your reach and authority with backlinks.

Backlinks are also known as inbound links or external links. These refer to links on one website pointing to another website. Yoast SEO automatically tallies the outgoing links (as well as internal links) so you can see if you’re using enough. In this article, we’re more interested in other websites linking to ours.

Why is this important? Semrush says “Search engines, like Google or Bing, view backlinks as indicators of quality content that has the support of other websites. Pages with more backlinks can rank higher on SERPs (search engine results pages).”

A key part of this higher rank comes from the authority Google sees in your website. And guess what increases this perceived authority? That’s right, backlinks from other sites.

What's a good way you can get a backlink?

One of the most popular ways of getting backlinks is the tried and tested guest post. This involves finding another similar website and writing a blog post for them. For example, if you’re selling laptops, you could find a tech magazine that reviews similar products. With an insightful article and a link to your website, you could not only improve the authority of your site but also direct traffic to your site too.

Things to remember with SEO Backlinks

  • Make sure your link is set to ‘Follow’ to influence SEO. The alternative ‘No Follow’ has no effect on SEO but can boost visitor traffic.
  • The more high ranking the site the more authority it gives your website.
  • Try and find a website in the same niche, with high traffic and with a well-established reputation.

How do we Maximise SEO Backlinks?

A good way to get more links to our own site is to do a little bit of cold calling or cold emailing. Find a high-authority website and reach out to them! If you see an article you like that covers a similar topic, enquire about getting added to the reference list.

You can use a tool called Buzzsumo to find mentions of a certain topic. This can help you study the competition or find a website to collaborate with.

Buzzsumo can also help you find mentions of your website. This comes in handy when your business is mentioned but no link is used. Get in touch with the owner of the website to get that credit and rack up another backlink.
